BIM - Banque d'instruments de mesure (offered by GRICS)
| Description: | BIM, (banque d'instruments de mesure) is one of the services offered
by the Société GRICS. It is a databank of exams, exam questions, and other evaluation material for
teachers, principals, pedagogical consultants and directors of instructional services.
BIM is also the software that manages the databank and generates made-to-measure examinations. But most important, BIM is a team that works in concert throughout Quebec with teachers and consultants to produce evaluation tools and oversees their content validation, linguistic revision, computerization, and graphic design. A BIM exam is a complete, ready-to-use document that generally comprises an instruction/marking guide, a student question booklet and an answer booklet. BIM items are questions or tasks that test a terminal or an intermediate objective of the courses set by the MELS. All items are classified under various headings, making it easy to prepare customized exams. Most of the examinations developed by BIM's French sector are adapted for the English sector through the cooperative efforts of the English school boards. Teachers and pedagogical consultants develop English mother tongue and French second-language examinations specifically for the English sector. The content of the English General Education databank currently includes over 400 examinations and approximately 15 600 items spanning both the elementary and the secondary levels of education. General Education - Adult Sector Most evaluation instruments distributed through BIM-DFGA have been developed by the member school boards. BIM and school board consultants have established a rigorous procedure to develop, validate, and revise all exams, ensuring that they faithfully conform to the orientations, skills and objectives of the adult education courses offered. The present databank for the English Adult Education Sector includes over 160 examinations and 2 100 items for the following courses: Geography, Economics, Literacy, Language Arts, Mathematics, Micro computing and Political Life. Managing Adult Education Centres BIM software gives adult-centre directors and staffs a wide range of options to help them efficiently manage student files, testing sessions, and testing rooms. BIM makes it easy to exert control over testing procedures, enabling users to ensure that the exams assigned to any given student have not been administered previously. Among BIM's many features is one that enables users to print a list of all students scheduled to take exams on a given date as well as the specific exam assigned to each student, thereby eliminating the need to have multiple copies of exams on file. Inventories of materials needed for testing purposes and allocation of testing rooms can be managed through the BIM program. Vocational and Technical Education Sector Recognition of the diversity of competencies that students in the Vocational and Technical Sector share with their fellow students is a hallmark of the Tech Voc programs. In light of this, BIM has helped develop examinations for those modules that fall under the local responsibility of school boards. Among the salient features of this cooperative service are: - Collaboration between school boards to develop examinations - Commitment of pedagogical consultants and teachers to develop content - Reduction in school board expenses for evaluation instruments - Availability of quality 'ready-to-use' examinations - Standardized presentation and layout Exams are available for the following courses in the English Technical Vocational Sector: Accounting, Automobile Mechanics, Home Care, Professional Sales, Secretarial Studies, Starting a Business. |
