Henry Bibb

HENRY BIBB

Born a slave in Kentucky in 1815, Bibb escaped to Cincinnati in 1837, but was recaptured when he returned for his wife. Escaping again, he reached Detroit, and became a noted lecturer for the anti-slavery cause. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, Bibb came to Canada, and founded the newspaper, Voice of the Fugitive, in Sandwich. He was closely associated with the Refugee Home Society's settlement for fugitive slaves in Sandwich Township.
