Learning and Evaluation Situations in Science and Technology
The following learning and evaluation situations have been developed by LEARN for use in teaching and learning Science & Technology programs. A team of educators and consultants have worked on various stages of the design and development of this material, including: Sandra Booth, Vincent Jansen, Kristine Thibeault, Christine Truesdale and Tamara Vaughan. Some of these learning and evaluation situations were specifically created for use in a distance education environment. In these situations, the LES may require some adaptation to suit the needs of your particular learning situation.
Each learning situation is supported by a number of tools and resources that compliment the LES and are accessible through the file links on this page. Each LES provide a general overview of course content and development of competencies in this year group.
Secondary Cycle 2, Year 1
LES 1 - Sports Injuries and Healing
Main Question or Focus: Why do some sports injuries heal faster and more completely than others?
Description of the Learning Situation and Learning GoalsStudents will examine body functions involved in normal movement and athletic activities and consider which structures and functions are involved. Students will then investigate several types of common injuries to the musculoskeletal system. They will consider and determine which type of injury is most quickly and completely healed.
Student Products and Processes
Students will find and organize information on the structures and functions of the tissues, organs and the musculoskeletal system and wound healing processes.

Secondary Cycle 2, Year 1
LES 2 - If It's Broken, Fix It!
Main Question or Focus: How can modern technology
help make the home more accessible to individuals with motor disabilities?
Students will examine body functions involved in normal movement and athletic activities and consider which structures and functions are involved. Students will then investigate several types of common injuries to the musculoskeletal system. They will consider and determine which type of injury is most quickly and completely healed.
Student Products and Processes
A presentation of the student's conclusions and supporting information will summarize his/her
understanding of the main question. Students prepare a full study on levers and their
issue. Students build a simple machine designed to assist an individual with a motor
disability in the home.

LES 3 - Human Transport Network (Circulation and Fluid Systems)
Part 1: London Bridge is Falling Down
Main Question or Focus: How can we keep our
circulatory system healthy?
Description of the Learning Situation and Learning
Goals
Students will develop self-awareness about the circulatory system and the modes of
transporting materials throughout the body. Students will develop an analogy between the
development of atherosclerosis or coronary heart disease in humans and neglected infrastructure
within Quebec.
Student Products and Processes
- Mindmap or flowchart of components of the circulatory system
- Mapping of the main functional organs in circulation, transport pathways of nutrients
- The design of inputs and outputs of metabolic activity ( food vs waste)
- The need for control of flow
- Factors affecting control involving blood as medium
- Design of an object

LES 4 - Human Transport System (Circulation and Fluid
Systems)
Part 2: Tourist Trap: Creating a Tour of the HTN
Main Question or Focus: How are nutrients transported
throughout the body?
Students are asked to create a 'map' of the human transport system that will be used by two tourists to navigate through the body to a desired location. Based on information acquired throughout the LES, students will also create a travel brochure detailing important and interesting aspects of the human transport network that they will use to 'sell' the trip to their tourists.
